Airborne Precautions are crucial for preventing the transmission of infectious agents that are spread through tiny airborne particles. For these precautions, the use of a fit-tested NIOSH N95 respirator or higher is essential. This type of mask is designed to filter out at least 95% of airborne particles, thereby protecting the healthcare worker or caregiver from inhaling harmful pathogens.

The need for a properly fit-tested respirator stems from the fact that airborne particles can remain suspended in the air and travel long distances. A surgical mask, while providing some barrier, does not offer the same level of protection against particles that are small enough to bypass it. The fit-testing ensures that the respirator forms a proper seal around the face, which is vital for effective filtration of the air being breathed.
